Best Year Ever!

30 Dec

January: I take a reactionary plunge into willful unemployment as a consequence of my brain damage. I find that “early retirement” suits me quite nicely!

February: I turn 40 — which is approximately 1.5 years longer than I was “supposed” to live if you ask the doctors.

March: I return to the scene of my brain bashing for the first time, only to learn that it likely did NOT occur there, which opens up whole new worlds of wonder and perspective. Also, I spend the entire month (and then some) learning Statistical Methods for Life Science Researchers and somehow earn an “A” in the class. An “A” — in a MATH class! This is nothing short of a modern-day miracle.

April: I decide that My First Ever Official Bike Race should be one that involves 123 miles and 13,000′ of climbing. It’s fun! … Except when it sucked. But the fact that it sucked SO much and yet I still managed to do it (and not come in last), made it extra-super-awesome!

May: I dabble in dealing drugs to children. This actually was not fun at all, but I’m profoundly grateful for having had the experience.

June: I learn that my father’s suicide is a REALLY popular blog topic (#1 by a landslide … particularly among readers in India, of all places) and that I can conquer a volcano even while being surfeited by unexpected physiological challenges.

July: I cry almost every day this month while witnessing bicycle-based miracles in Europe. Also, I hang out with the Tour de France pros and VIPs and then follow that up with some crazy epic not-safe-for-the-blog adventures in London and Northern Italy with my ex-boss and the cousin who stole my name (Kristin … she was born first, so she got the normal spelling; it’s the only thing “normal” about her, though, which is what makes us sort of like 2-of-a-kind).

August: I plunge ever deeper into a dental disaster that ends up costing nearly as much as a Colnago bicycle, I experience a “victory” in a pro bono case that nearly rips my heart out, and get blindsided by a theater performance (Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train): Together these things make me long for the lawyering (and paycheck) I’d left behind just 6 months prior…

September: Surprise! I’m single!

October: I capitalize on the unexpected free time given to me by September’s main event and decide to take August’s hint and mix it with July’s tears, June’s triumphs, May’s gratitude, April’s audaciousness, March’s mysteries and miracles, February’s turning point, and thereby totally reverse course on January’s drop-out. The result is nothing short of insane brilliance that yields a ridiculous amount of happiness.

November: I just chill. And gave thanks. And host a Bicycle Parade.

December: I earn an “A” in Psychology (a minor miracle, given the very low “B” I received on the midterm) and an “A+” in Neurophysiology with a special note on my term paper, as follows: “This was one of the best-researched papers to ever be submitted in the 8 years I’ve taught this course and it was absolutely the most well written. You have a talent for words and a bright future as a scientist.” No blog link for that one, cuz you’re reading it here for the first time. And now I can tell you that this served as a major turning point for me. Honestly, until I got that note I was really on the fence about the whole “Damn, I am a pretty good lawyer and I sorta-kinda miss that life and I’m not sure that I have what it takes to hack it in this new science-y world…”  That note changed everything though.

I am where I’m meant to be and I can’t wait to see what 2014 holds for me.

But you know what the really, really, REALLY BEST part about 2013 was?

My helmet.

The same one I started the year with.

This is the first helmet to ever last a full year with me. No wrecks in 2013!

And, no, don’t worry, I didn’t just curse myself. I’m not riding tomorrow (Dec 31). Av and I logged almost 10,000 miles this year — but not close enough to try to top it off tomorrow.

We had a good year. A really, really, REALLY good year.

Bring on another year of JustAdventures!

[…] Of course, MY caution and awareness could not mitigate against the wonton disregard exhibited by the bus driver who plowed into me and just kept going, leaving a totaled vehicle (my bike) and a broken body (me) in his/her wake. But, as this blog previously explained, that 2012 wreck did not squelch my passion. Onward I rode and we all got to celebrate the fact that I enjoyed a 100% incident-free 2013. […]
