Yup, I’m in love!

26 Jan

For years, literally YEARS, some well-intentioned friends dropped hints. They’d suggest (some more subtly than others) that I should consider making a change. They were adamant that I’d be happy if I did. I wouldn’t listen to them, though. I was perfectly happy. No need to upset the apple cart, right? Sure, I sometimes acknowledged if you happened to catch me in an unguarded moment, there were rough patches, but looking back on the relationship as whole, it was all good! Really! I promise!

Well, to be honest (now), though, I must admit that, like so many things, some of the magic had faded, the thrills came less often, we’d settled into a comfortable routine…

And then one day I woke up and thought: Seriously, WTF?!? Since when am I OK with “comfortable routine”?!?  This girl needs some serious CHANGE in her life!

And so I turned to the guy I always seem to turn to when the isht hits the fan: My Coach.

Well — my ex-coach. I actually fired him a month or so ago, but we still maintain nearly daily contact in connection with our joint-efforts to establish a new Ride2Recovery training site. (ex)Coach is a big fan of all things internet, so we started with that approach. I sent him a few profiles to review. He identified some “red flags” that I would not have intuited on my own. Eventually — and MUCH to my surprise (because I am SOOOOO friggin’ clueless about all this…), he suggested “Bachelor #1.”

Huh. OK, then … I’m trusting you, (ex)Coach!

I met B1 on Friday night. The second I laid eyes on him it was as if The Imaginary God of Fate and Happiness had electrified my soul with a firey-hot passion. Holy cow, B1 was good lookin’! But that was just a shallow first impression — a glancing little look-see in the company of friends before our real date on Saturday morning.

We spent ~2 hours hanging out in Brentwood and ambling along Sullivan Canyon. He was far more interesting and responsive than I would’ve ever predicted. He’s confident, but not cocky. Both stable and adventurous. I felt simultaneously thrilled and comfortable. It was pretty much The Perfect First Date. We made plans to meet again on Wednesday, but shortly after I woke up this morning he called. Could I make time for a quick outing before I went out for my long ride with Avengelyne?

<guilt-infused, totally exhilarated, oh-so-twitterpated, can’t-wait-to-see-you-again SIGH>

Yes, OK, let’s do it

One hour later, I knew: George and I will be together for a long, long, l-o-n-g time.

So: Credit where it’s due:

  • Rick Garcia, Brooke Barlow, Amy Gianos, Craig Ross, Peyton Skelton, Sarah Chambless, and all you others … you were right. Change is good. I am deliriously happy.

  • (ex)Coach [and the entire awesome BE crew]? THANK YOU for introducing me to the bike of my dreams — you may have just earned back your job. ♥

    Hooray! Now you have to come back to CO and ride my favorite trail! And for the record, I never suggested complete change, merely an addition to help round out your riding joy 🙂 Just had my first mtn bike ride of the season yesterday (pure air-sucking bliss!) and today woke to snow. Maybe an LA trip is in order for some winter riding!
