Return from Hiatus

4 Jan

In our last episode, 360 days ago, CZ set out to discover herself/create a life without undue influence or interference from social media. Instead, she discovered that this virtual space fills a real need within her: Writing for the public somehow enables her to examine her private thoughts more deeply, and likely more honestly, too.

As much as she fancies herself a go-getting self-starter, the truth is that she performs best when she feels obligated to serve others. She needs you and she misses you and she hopes you will be patient with her as she struggles to regain her writing mojo even as she continues to muddle through with her efforts to craft a life of meaningful, joy-infused significance.

2016 Recap

Looking back at the eleven updates provided in connection with the #project11 social media experiment, CZ can identify three themes:

  1. The less CZ rode her bike the fatter she got and the more trips to the neurologist she got to “enjoy;”
  2. The more CZ managed to get out of town, the easier it was for her to reset and recenter herself; and
  3. She felt most happy and at ease when she motivated to overcome her natural hermit tendencies and allowed herself to be included in the lives of others (and when they reciprocated by joining some of her shenanigans as well).

And then there are the things that the 2016 photo collages don’t show, like:

  1. Any foreign lands;
  2. Any strategy (i.e., thinking/drinking) sessions regarding CZ’s future business plan; or
  3. Any creative endeavor outside of mandatory school projects (unless playing Jenga or working on a puzzle while drinking beers count…).

The irony is not lost upon her that she is in a graduate school program for a profession whose main goal is to provide a sense of efficacy, balance, and meaning in life and yet she (and ~98.8% of her fellow students) feels more out-of-whack than ever before … yes, even worse than when she was brain-bashed because during those dark days she didn’t know enough about herself to understand how fucked she was….

In any event, taken together, the #project11 data (or lack thereof) considerably help CZ update, modify, and hone her life for the coming year.

2017 Preview

Once CZ clarified the need to prioritize bicycle time and the importance of travel, connecting with others, and having a regular creative outlet, planning for this year became simple, especially given that nearly all of her 18 units this semester are electives, which means she has an incredible amount of freedom in crafting her schedule!
Accordingly, the 2017 CZ Show will feature:

A “secret” monthly adventure that this blog will reveal on the 17th of each month, with sporadic updates shared via the JustAdventures FB page (so if you haven’t “liked” it, hop to it!). The general rules and parameters governing the #adventure17 program will be shared with you soon… so, stay tuned for that!

“Weekends” that will start on Wednesday at noon and continue until 1:00pm on Monday (yup, you read that correctly: I will enjoy 5-day weekends!). Zolie, Avengelyne, George, Mustafa, and I hope to explore wide open spaces and/or the comfy abodes of agreeable companions as often as possible (or at least until the semester ends in May). So if you’d like us to make a special appearance at your home or join you in some sort of weekend outing, let us know!

A regularly appearing special guest star formerly known as “Coach” who now serves dual purposes in my life: Future posts may refer to him as “Bike Boss” (in connection with bicycle/fitness plans) or as “Partner Pete” (in connection with business plans… he and I will open a neuro-health center in 2020; details will be shared later). BB/PP = the same guy and he’s in charge of whipping me back into shape and restoring my overarching sense of purpose–no pressure though!

Significant foreign travel. I was deeply depressed by the lack of foreign lands in my #project11 photos. That was NOT who I am. Or, rather, not whom I believe myself to be. ๐Ÿ˜ฌInspired/panicked by that shameful realization, almost immediately following my past #project11 update, BB/PP and I took off for Mexico–he’d never been and I needed to practice my Spanish in advance of my end-of-year trip to Cuba. The Mexico trip was just 2 nights and Cuba, just 5, but those 7 nights generated enough tales to fuel this blog for many moons to come…

My writing skills are rusty, but hang in there with me dear reader and we’ll get this JustAdventures train back on track and rolling smoothly in no time.

Parting Thought: There are 30,000 days in your life. When I was 24, I realized I’m almost 9,000 days down. There are no warm-ups, no practice rounds, no reset buttons. Your biggest risk isn’t failing, it’s getting too comfortable. Every day, we’re writing a few more words of a story. I wanted my story to be an adventure and that’s made all the difference. ~Drew Houston

Kitchen experiments are always enticing–now if only I knew who this was! (Shoot me an email, Mr/Ms Anonymous…) ๐Ÿ˜˜
